What actually is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It consists of a repertoire of movements that are designed to strengthen the entire body - in particular the core, plus also improve flexibility, control and balance. Pilates exercises can be performed on a mat or using specialised equipment such as a reformer.
There are many health benefits to participating in Pilates including:
Increased strength, flexibility and balance
Reduced pain and stiffness
Reduced risk of injury
Improved sleep and mental health
Decreased stress levels and systemic inflammation
What is Clinical Pilates?
While both Pilates and Clinical Pilates share some similarities, Clinical Pilates is more focused on rehabilitation and addressing specific injuries or conditions through the restoration of strength, range of motion and control. It takes account of an individual’s current ability as well as any specific tissue healing times or current guidelines for conditions and addresses any functional deficits. Clinical Pilates aims to get the client back to their goal, whether that be getting on and off the floor, playing basketball after ACL surgery, returning to surfing after loss of function due to knee osteoarthritis, or bending over to tie your shoe laces pain free.
A clinical Pilates program will also help you assess and address stressors and other lifestyle factors that can contribute to pain, while also helping you outline healthy behaviours and support strategies that can build resilience and reduce pain.
Who can benefit from Clinical Pilates?
Our Clinical Pilates programs will especially benefit those who are recovering from injury, surgery or suffering from long term, chronic or widespread pain.
